Former CIA Recruiting Officer Shares Leadership Insight | S2 E2 | Growing Your Business with People

Advice to CEOs: if you have a head of HR or TA who you do not see as a business partner, replace them with someone who you do trust as a business partner. In episode 2 of Season 2, host Jeff Lackey welcomes Ron Patrick, former head of recruitment for the CIA. Ron Patrick had an unconventional career path, starting off as a Catholic priest before transitioning to a drug abuse counselor and eventually an intelligence officer for the government. He got the job after getting the right answer to a Trivial Pursuit question at a picnic with government employees. After that, the head of HR asked him to join the team. Ron Patrick also served as the former CEO of Tendergrass, a small successful company where he was able to recruit and grow his own team. Once he joined, he quickly realized the strain the current employees were under, working 16-18 hours a day. He began assessing the company, understanding the business, and determining what needed to be done to grow sustainably. For episode 1 of Season 2, Jeff Lackey welcomes; Mark Hoplamazian, CEO of Hyatt and chair of Skills for Chicagoland's Future, Pam Tully, the chief program officer for Skills for Chicagoland's Future, and Daniel Cervantes, Senior Vice President, National Expansion and strategic Initiatives for Skills for Chicagoland's Future and the National Expansion Committee. The conversation focused on how CEOs and business leaders can access talent from low opportunity neighborhoods, how to access talent outside of the Chicago, Rhode Island and Phoenix markets, and how to get involved more broadly.
